Housing
New View Society provides subsidized accommodation and support through three
affordable housing options for adults with a mental illness. This is available in the Tri-Cities area of the Lower
Mainland of British Columbia. The Tri-Cities area includes Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, and Port Moody.
The types of housing include shared accommodation homes, supported independent
living (SIL) apartments, and independent living, all in the community. Subsidies are provided by BC Housing and
Fraser Health, and administered through New View Society.
To be eligible to apply for these types of accommodation, the applicant must be on
a limited income, have a diagnosis of mental illness and be receiving treatment. Tenants must have the life skills
necessary to manage their accommodation with minimal support, and must comply with rental agreements. For more
information, please contact Louise Jolicoeur at 604-941-3222, extension 115.
Shared Accommodation Homes
New View Society owns one apartment building (that houses a total of 23 tenants),
and four homes in Port Coquitlam. Each tenant has a private bedroom and then shares the kitchen, living room, and
bathrooms. All tenants share the tasks involved in keeping the house clean. Each tenant must have a willingness to
work on the life skills needed to live independently.
A support worker provides daily support as needed and facilitates house meetings.
They also provide tenants with the support needed to identify their goals and access required resources. Eligible
tenants are single (no families), age 19 or over, willing to abide by the house expectations, and have the ability
to perform those daily activities required in independent living: manage one's medications, cook, keep house,
handle money, and relate positively to others.
General expectations for shared accommodation are: no physical violence or threats
to others, no alcohol or drug use in the house, and a requirement to attend a weekly house meeting.
Supported Independent Living
New View Society administers subsidies for safe, secure apartments in the
community that fall within a certain price range. This subsidy makes it possible for tenants to access a higher
standard of housing and improve their quality of life. Each tenant has a support worker to support them in
attaining their goals and accessing required resources. Eligible tenants will comply with rental agreements and
have the life skills needed to manage an apartment with minimal support.
Independent Living
Housing charges are based on income. These rates are set by BC Housing standards
(1/3 of income). Subsidized Housing allows for a better quality of life and a higher standard of housing. A tenant
may or may not have a support worker to support them depending on their needs. Eligible tenants will comply with
rental agreements and have the lifeskills needed to manage an apartment.
